New York Baptist Church Records at the Samuel Colgate Historical Library

Table of Contents

More than 500 volumes of original records of churches, associations, and state bodies have been placed in the American Baptist – Samuel Colgate Historical Library. These records were placed there voluntarily. Baptist polity does not have any mechanism to require a local congregation to deposit its records at this site or at any site. As a result, the records of many Baptist churches over the years have been lost. The original records deposited there are arranged alphabetically by state. Records of state bodies are placed first, then associational records. Local church records are placed next, alphabetically by city or town and name of church. The few international records which they hold are found at the end of this inventory. Their holdings include microfilmed and photo duplicated copies as well. This list is current as of 2015.

These records are not available online. In order to access them you must visit the Samuel Colgate Historical Library!

2 thoughts on “New York Baptist Church Records at the Samuel Colgate Historical Library”

  1. I am looking for informatation on Nicholas Northrup b. 1751 D 1836 and his daughter Drusillla b 1804 b 1881. Nicholas was a Patriot in the Revolutionary War and also a Baptist Preacher in Stephentown, NY. In a1925, the DAR chapter in Chautauqua County New York published a book titled the “Soldiers of the American Revolution: who at one time were residents of, or whose graves are located in Chautauqua County New York”. A supplement titled “Supplement to Soldiers of the American Revolution, Chautauqua County, New York” / Frank B. Lamb. Westfield, N.Y. : F.B. Lamb, collected between 1936 and 1946 and published as an addendum to the original 1925 document. In the supplement item 60 concerns Nicholas Northrup and lists that Drusilla was married to Perry Bentley. The information was provided in 1940 by Miss Leone B Hall of Williamstown, Mass and listes The Colgate Baptist Historical Collection of Hamilton, New York, as one of her sources. The Colgate Baptist Historical Collection was moved from Colgate to the Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in 1947-48 and was eventually integrated into the American Baptist Historical Society. I found the following historical quote concerning Nicholas – “A second Free Communion Baptist church was organized March 20, 1793, ten years after the first of that denomination, at “Little Hoosick hollow,” in the eastern part of the town. The only pastor the church ever had was an uneducated man named Nicholas Northrup, who was ordained as the “watchman” of the little flock. Soon after his death, which occurred about 1830, the church became extinct.” I am wondering is someone can review the documents in your collection associated with Stephen Town – to see if there is any information concering Nicholas’s Daughter Drusilla an her connection to Perry Bentley. I live in Texas so it will be difficult for me to travel to New York to visit your library. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. The research is needed to verify an ancestoral connection for my wife Diane Bentley Rollins, associated with her DAR membership.

  2. Looking for information. Was hoping this collection was already digitized. Am looking for Perry Watson Died Feb 1832 “Greenwich,” Washington Co NY. Moved up to this place from RI after his Daughter Sally killed herself (Nailer Tom’s Diary). I am looking for Perry and his wife Mercy (Tefft) Watson’s exact burial location (and Mercy’s death info as well). After he died his son Beriah and the family removed to Allegany County. Perry was a Revolutionary war soldier…(not to be confused with his great grandson of the same name born 1836).
