New York Indorsed Land Papers, 1643-1676

One of the most useful New York genealogical records is the type that deals with land, because, especially early in its history, New York was heavily involved with agriculture. One type of land record involves transfers from the colonial government to the first private owners. What follows is an index to the earliest years of the New York Land Grant Application Files from the New York Secretary of State’s Office. We have alphabetized this list to make it easy to find names, but we included the variable Record #, so that the original order of the data can be determined.

  1. John Hawkins, Mariner of New England, immigrated into Maryland 1651. He wrote his will on 3 Feb 1670: ” of ye county of Arrundalle in ye province of Mariland being in vigoreth health and memory lett ye God of my life be praised for ye same being intended a voidg for New England and not knowing how ye Lord will be pleased to dispose of this vessel”. He was a Quaker of the West River Meeting in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It was at William Richardson’s house that he wrote his will.
He had previously been at ” Fouldstone Creek in the precincts of New England”, aka Oyster Bay in 1665, because on 24 May 1665 he takes Raymond Staplefort/Hazelfort to court over a barke. This is referenced in litigation in the Provincial Court of Maryland.
John Hawkins, Mariner of New England was a merchant who traveled up and down the East coast of what would become the US until his death in 1675. He also traveled and did business in Manadoes Indonesia. This is referenced in litigation involving certain indentured servants.
He came in Massachusetts, ca 1630, lived there until he moved to Maryland. My question is why did he travel to Oyster Bay? Was it for the Quaker Meeting being held there in 1671?
