  1. Sir
What a great resource the Militia of Charlotte County, New York, 1775-1781 is!! So I am on the trail of a loyalist relative by the name of Ithiel (somestimes spelled Ethiel or Athiel) Towner who lived in Charlotte County perhaps near Patterson) In his claim to the crown he indicated that his home and crop in Charlotte County had been burned by a Maj Carleton in 1777 and that he was a militiaman and went with Gen Powell (Ticonderoga) and prisoners to St John’s at that time (in Nov 1777 ) after Saratoga. Perhaps part of the convention army? Do you have any insights on loyalist militia drawn all or in part from Charlotte County?

Any steer or suggestions would be welcome

    Matthew Towner

    • Hi Matthew, I have not studied the militia beyond publication of the post. Ithiel is not a common name and should make tracing him much easier. PS Ithiel frequently occurs in my family tree…
