The Argyle Patent and accompanying documents

This manuscript was reprinted from the appendix of the author’s “History of the Somonauk United Presbyterian church near Sandwich, De Kalb County, Illinois: with ancestral lines of the early members” published in Chicago in 1928. While we don’t have online access to this manuscript we do have online access to the original. The appendix covering the Argyle Patent can be found on pages 297-346. The Washington County New York Families can be found on pages 347-358: Clark, Gillespie, Livingston, McNaughton, and Savage.

Flower Genealogy of Jefferson County New York

Colonel George Walton Flower, the subject of the following memoir, was of English descent, his ancestors, known by the name Floier, holding large possessions in Devonshire at the time of the Conquest. One of the ancestors, Captain William Floier, was born near the city of Exeter in 1450 and accompanied the army of King Edward IV in the descent on France in 1490. He married Phillipa Crooke and became later a resident of Willston, Dorsetshire. Of his three sons, William, born 1530, married Elizabeth Kirk.

Militia of Charlotte County, New York, 1775-1781

This is a list of men who served in the Revolutionary War from Charlotte County, present-day Warren and Washington counties, New York. Many of the original pay lists from this period have been lost. These records are taken from both muster rolls and land bounty records.

History of Redwood Village, New York

Redwood, a thriving village near the line of Theresa, owes its origin to a glass-factory, established by John S. Foster, who for several years had been engaged in this business, as agent, at Boston, Burlington, Vt., and Bedford, Clinton county. In April, 1833, he visited this county, examined several localities, and finally selected this, which is on the stream connecting Mud and Butterfield lakes, the former of which is about 94 feet above the latter, affording a limited water-power, that had several years previous been improved by the erection of a saw- and grist-mill by David Smith, of Adams. The Book of Forfeitures is located in the Washington County Archives, Washington County Clerk’s Office, Fort Edward, NY. It contains the list and description of Loyalist properties that were seized and sold. The names given here are the purchasers of the properties.

Barnes Settlement Cemetery, Alexandria Bay, New York

View Larger Map | Get Directions | View Bird’s Eye Barnes Settlement Cemetery, on the Alexandria Center Road, seems isolated, far out in the country, with no house in sight. It covers an expanse of rolling ground well shaded with old trees, and is excellently kept. “No artificial flowers” warns a sign. Several trash barrels are posted in various places to encourage people to pick up after themselves, a large improvement over some cemeteries, where one can never find a place to deposit winter’s litter for Memorial Day clean up.
